How to join a wind band in Singapore as an adult

A lot of people stop playing after school. The clarinet or trumpet goes into a cupboard after JC, poly or university, and years later they miss it. If that sounds like you, it is not too late to come back.

Here is a simple guide to getting back into band music as an adult in Singapore, and what to expect if you audition for VENTUS.

Start by being honest about your level

Before you look for a band, spend a few weeks playing on your own. Take the instrument out, get it serviced if it has been sitting for a while, and play every day, even for 20 minutes. Long tones, scales and a piece you used to enjoy are enough to begin.

After a few weeks you will know roughly where you stand. That helps you pick the right group, because adult bands differ a lot, from relaxed social groups to ensembles that play difficult concert music.

Know what kind of band you want

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • How much time can I give? Many bands rehearse every week, with extra rehearsals before a concert.
  • What do I want to play? Light music and pops, or big concert works for wind orchestra.
  • Do I want a social group, a serious group, or both?

There is no wrong answer. The best band for you is the one you will keep turning up to.

What VENTUS looks for

VENTUS is a wind orchestra, so we play demanding music at a high level. We look for:

  • Woodwind, brass, percussion and double bass players
  • Aged 18 and above
  • Playing at least at Grade 8 standard and above
  • Committed to rehearsals and concerts
  • Happy to mentor and perform with Band Academy Singapore students

You don’t need to be a professional. Some of our members are full time musicians, and some play purely for the joy of it after a day at work. What matters is that you are reliable, come prepared and are happy to help younger musicians along.

How the audition works

Round 1: video. Fill in our audition form with your details and upload a video of yourself playing a piece of your choice, up to 5 minutes long. You can apply at any time of the year.

Round 2: live audition. If your video goes well, we invite you to play live for our section leaders, with a few scales and a short sight reading.

Welcome to VENTUS. If it’s a good fit, we welcome you to rehearsals and share everything you need to know.

Tips for your audition video

  • Pick a piece you play well, not the hardest piece you know. We would rather hear a clean, musical performance.
  • Warm up first, then record. The first take is rarely the best.
  • Find a quiet room and put your phone where it can see you and your instrument clearly.
  • Check the sound before you record the whole piece. Play a loud passage and listen back to make sure it doesn’t distort.

Common questions

Is there a membership fee? No, there’s no fee. In return, every VENTUS member helps to mentor and perform with the student ensembles at Band Academy Singapore.

Do I need my own instrument? Yes, please bring your own instrument. Percussion instruments are provided.

When are auditions held? All year round. Just fill in the audition form and we’ll get back to you.
